Ambergris is located 35 miles east of Belize City and about 0.75 mile west of the Belize Barrier Reef. The island was created when coral pieces and sediment from the Rio Hondo accumulated as it flowed from what is now northern Belize. Mangrove swamps, a dozen lagoons, a plateau, and a series of low sand hills comprise the caye. Laguna de San Pedro, a 2.5-mile-long lagoon fed by 15 streams, is located on the village's western outskirts. San Pedro Settlement, located atop a sand ridge near the island's southern end, is the island's lone town and the most visited location in Belize. It is densely packed with lodgings, restaurants, pubs, golf carts, and other amenities. San Pedro is also the most costly section of Belize, with certain basic items and cuisines costing twice what they do on the mainland, and sometimes even more than comparable services and restaurants in the United States.
