A gesture drawing is performed swiftly â often in set intervals of 20, 30, 60, or 90 seconds â utilizing quick, expressive lines. Gesture drawings capture the fundamental shapes and proportions of a topic – the emotion and soul of the subject – without concentrating only on detail. They are an excellent technique to capture movement and activity, as well as to improve your sketching speed, confidence, and instinctive mark-making ability. Without the use of an eraser, gesture drawings are best finished with smooth, readily applied materials (chunky graphite pencils, charcoal sticks, pastels, or soft brushes soaked in Indian ink, for example).
