Protracted quotations Direct quotes of 40 words or more should be placed in a free-standing block of typewritten lines without quotation marks. Begin the quote on a new line, 1/2 inch indented from the left margin, in the same manner as you would a new paragraph. Indent the beginning line of any successive paragraph inside the quote 1/2 inch from the new margin. Maintain double-spacing throughout, but omit the preceding or following blank lines. After the final punctuation mark, the parenthetical citation should appear.
