Negative Characteristics Certain components in this picture are weaker than those in the prior two films. There is some adult comedy in this picture, despite the fact that it may be rather amusing, such as the moment in which Sid milked a male bull, which was quite crude. As with the prior two flicks, there is some malice directed towards Sid. Rudy's survival of the fall after being driven into a chasm by the mother T-Rex is not explained. The finale with Scrat and Scratte was intended to be humorous, but it's really rather painful, as Scrat's hunger for his prized acorn (combined with his becoming bored of Scratte's demanding habits) causes him to pick the acorn over her. If Scrat and Scratte had remained together, this film would have been the ideal conclusion to the series (see WIR#20). Speaking of which, the series suffered a setback after this film.
The tiger has learnt to survive with food animals like as sloths and gazelles in the Ice Age flicks, but dinosaurs are not covered by the ceasefire, and this one is large enough to consume a wooly mammoth in one bite. This sets the stage for the series' signature pursuit sequences, which include dizzying falls, catapults into the sky, near calls, and potential digesting. This is sheer innovation, and unlike other family animation's repetitive chase scenes, "Ice Age: Dawn of the Dinosaurs" is relentlessly imaginative aesthetically. Carlos Saldanha, who wrote the 2002 picture and co-directed "Ice Age: The Meltdown" (2006), is the director this time, and several of his scenes are reminiscent of the great Scratt-and-acorn sequence that started the original "Ice Age." This includes one in which Scrat, Scratt, and the acorn are stuck within floating bubbles, which the acorn doesn't mind. Nonetheless, this is a gifted acorn, singing a melody from the Gilbert O'Sullivan repertoire to convey how alone an acorn may feel at times. With an acorn so intelligent, you don't want to consume it all at once.
