I'm not sure why no one has written about this before, but on the day I visited, there were several individuals selling illegally inexpensive wine around night. Don't be fooled...this is the only technique they've discovered to check what you're carrying. My girlfriend and I were enjoying a picnic when this man pretended to be inebriated and sat in front of us, begging for a sandwich. We declined, but he was adamant. Numerous other groups sat around us, and a couple at the back saw everything and did NOTHING. After approximately two minutes of urging, another man arrived strolling behind us and chatting loudly in such a way that drew our attention to him. When we turned around, the inebriated man was holding a twenty-euro note, indicating he was about to pay for a sandwich. As soon as we replied no again, he went, and the next thing we saw was that our camera was vanished. The worst part is that there was not a single police officer in sight, despite our efforts.

The name of this sprawling public garden dates all the way back to this era, in honor of Mars, the Roman god of war.
In June 1837, to commemorate the duc d'Orlans's marriage, the Champ-de-Mars served as a stage for reenacting the capture of the citadelle d'Anvers in 1832. On 15 June 1837, as a result of a mob movement, 24 people are arrested, pressed, fouled, and crase against barbed wire. The Champ-de-Mars welcomes the Fate de la Concorde on 21 May 1848.

Along with offering a calm escape in the middle of the French capital, Champ de Mars has a few attractions for families with little children and is a favorite location for watching city fireworks displays and light shows from the Eiffel Tower.
