The station, formerly known as Radio Ireland, began broadcasting on St. Patrick's Day, 17 March 1997. Initially, the station was a hybrid network, carrying a combination of discussion and music. However, after six months of poor ratings and a listenership of less than 1%, the station was rebranded as 100-102 Today FM on 1 January 1998. [11] The station eliminated almost all of its programming and radically altered its music policy. [11] Eamon Dunphy's co-host (Anne-Marie Hourihan) was fired, despite his heavy promotion as a solo act, and Ian Dempsey and Ray D'Arcy were snatched from RT's arch-rivals. [11] The IRTC agreed to the schedule revisions, albeit it expressed dissatisfaction with the new timetable in a statement shortly after the restart. Within three months, though, the station's listenership almost doubled. Today FM restructured its daytime program in 2004, eliminating The Ian Dempsey Breakfast Show to allow The Ray D'Arcy Show to compete directly with The Gerry Ryan Show. According to The Irish Cancer Society, one in every two of us will be diagnosed with cancer throughout our lives by 2020. However, thanks in large part to cancer research, more individuals are surviving cancer than ever before. There are currently over 200,000 cancer survivors in Ireland.
