The church was founded in 1846 on the initiative of Jamaican Sklaven, Schottish Missionaries, and the Calabar King. Rev. Hope Masterton Waddell led the Church of Scotland's missionary team. In 1858, the church was granted a charter and continued to function as the Church of Scotland's Presbyterium of Biafra (named after the geographical region of Biafra). From 1921 until 1945, she was a synod and then an independent church known as the Presbyterian Church of Biafra. The church was renamed Presbyterian Church of Eastern Nigeria in 1952, but retained its original name upon Nigeria's independence in 1960. The church is actively involved in mission work in Nigeria's traditional non-presbyterian and nonchristian regions, as well as in Benin and Togo. The missionary engagement began in 1998 with the establishment of a national directorate for missionary activities. With the ordination of a woman in 1982, the PCN assumed the Predigtamt for Women.
