Since the Middle Ages, it has been customary for participants in carnival parades in Northern Italy to throw things towards the audience, most often mud balls, eggs, money, or fruit. These traditions continue in other forms in certain cities, including as Ivrea's "Battle of the Oranges." Since the 14th century, hurling things during parades has been frequently recorded in Milan. During parades, aristocrats tossed candy and flowers, while ladies flung eggshells loaded with essences and fragrances. Lower-class citizens insulted nobility with rotten eggs, and clashes between rival groups or districts became widespread. In 1597, city governor Juan Fernandez de Velasco prohibited egg flinging, as well as squittaroli (spraying liquids in public)[6] and other immoral activities. The ritual died out for approximately a century until resurfacing in the 1700s with the introduction of miniature sweets, mostly sugar-coated seeds. Coriander (coriandolo in Italian) seeds were mostly utilized for the sugar sweets; coriandolo is a widespread planting in the region; fact, the Italian term for confetti is coriandoli.
