Getting a Glimpse of the Terrain This valley stretches from north of Portland to south of Eugene and shares the same latitude as some of the world's great wine regions (Bordeaux, Burgundy). The Willamette Valley established Oregon as a wine-drinking destination. This 120-mile-long region, bordered by Portland and Eugene, accounts for 72 percent of the state's wine production and all of its exports.
The first wine grapes were planted in the Willamette Valley in the Dundee Hills AVA, which remains Oregon's most densely planted region. The Dundee Hills' sediment-rich soils are especially known for their pinot noir output, as they are sandwiched between the Willamette River to the south and the Chehalem Valley to the north.
