The First Part [edit]
Bruce Wayne renounced his Batman identity after the murder of his protégé Jason Todd. Ten years later, in mid-1986, Gotham City is engulfed in violence and tormented by the Mutants gang. Wayne, 55, retains a connection with retired Police Commissioner James Gordon, 70 (who is aware that Wayne was Batman), but he has lost contact with Dick Grayson and has not spoken to him in a while, while the Joker (Batman's archenemy) has been catatonic in Arkham Asylum since Wayne's retirement. Harvey Dent, an Arkham convict and former district attorney, receives facial reconstruction surgery to fix his deformed visage. Although he is certified sane upon his discharge, he immediately goes into hiding. Dent's absence, news reports about the crime pandemic, and memories of his parents' deaths motivate Wayne to resurrect Batman. He fights major crimes, saving 13-year-old Carrie Kelley, but is now constrained by his physical limits due to his advanced age.
